USMLE Transcript ERAS documents are crucial components of a residency program application in the United States. The ERAS Support Services section offers a Request for Transcript Transfer from ECFMG Certification, which applicants can use to obtain their USMLE transcript. What Documents Can Be Used in ERAS: An Overview

Every program has different requirements for the documents that need to be submitted along with the MyERAS® application. Do your research on each program to find out what is needed before assigning documents.

Within your MyERAS account, you can create personal statement(s); identify the individuals who will write letters of recommendation (LoRs) for you; authorize the release of your COMLEX-USA and/or USMLE transcripts; and manage all other documents. The main documents used in ERAS are overviewed below. For specific information, please refer to the Documents section of the MyERAS User Guide.

Tracking Documents: What You Need to Know

The dashboard on MyERAS gives you an overview of the progress of different documents and their statuses.

  • The MyERAS dashboard provides a snapshot of the progress of various documents and their statuses.

  • Photos must be 2.5 in. x 3.5 in., be at least 150 dpi resolution and have a file size of less than 150kb.

  • Personal statements must be created in plain text formatting, no HTML or special text formatting is allowed.

  • LoRs must be uploaded through the ERAS Letter of Recommendation Portal (LoRP) by the LoR Author.

  • For USMLE transcripts, applicants must authorize the release and pay a one-time fee of $80.

  • For COMLEX-USA transcripts, applicants must authorize the release and pay a one-time fee of $80.

  • MSPE must be uploaded by the Designated Dean's Office and IMGs must indicate if they or their medical school will provide the MSPE to ECFMG.

  • MS Transcript must be uploaded by the Designated Dean's Office and IMGs must indicate if they or their medical school will provide the MS Transcript to ECFMG.

  • MGs must also upload an ECFMG Status Report that confirms their ECFMG certification status (month/year passed exams).

Photos: Requirements for Uploading to My ERAS

The photo is most commonly used by programs to help identify applicants when they report for an interview. Applicants must upload their own photo in MyERAS by selecting Upload New Photo in the Actions column.

 

  • Please make sure that photo files do not exceed the following requirements

  • Photos must be 2.5” x 3.5” in dimensions.

  • Photos must have a resolution of 150 dpi.

  • file size of the photo should not exceed 150kb.

  • Photos must be uploaded by the applicant through the MyERAS system.

  • Photos should be in plain text formatting, not HTML or special formatting such as bold, italics, underline, text color, or alignment.

Personal Statements: Creating and Formatting Tips

Creating an effective Personal Statement for your ERAS application is an important step in the residency process. To ensure your statement stands out and is as effective as possible, it is important to adhere to plain text formatting and limit the length of your statement. 

When creating your statement, use a plain text word processing application such as Notepad (for Windows users) or Text Edit (for Mac Users) to ensure the text stays as clean as possible. Your statement should not exceed two pages and should be written in a conversational style. 

Additionally, be sure to avoid plagiarism by not copying any information from websites or other sources. Following these tips will help you create an engaging, effective Personal Statement that will help you stand out in residency programs.

Please Note Regarding Formatting

Personal Statements should be written in plain text. HTML and another special text formatting, like bold, italics, underlining, text color, and alignment, are not allowed. To make sure the text stays clean, personal statements created outside of MyERAS should be done in a plain text word processing application like Notepad (for Windows users) or Text Edit (for Mac Users).

Letters of Recommendation (LoRs): Guidelines and Tips

  • The LoRs (Letters of Recommendation) must be uploaded to the ERAS Letter of Recommendation Portal (LoRP) by the LoR Author. The applicant is responsible for following up with LoR Authors about the status.

  • Create a LoR entry for each LoR you intend to use during the application season in your MyERAS account.

  • Confirm each LoR entry before an associated Letter ID can be generated.

  • The Letter ID contained in the LoR Request form must be used to upload the associated LoR through the Letter of Recommendation Portal (LoRP).

  • Follow up with LoR Authors regarding LoRs.

  • Provide your LoR authors with clear information about the programs to which you are applying and the details about yourself that should be included in their letters.

  • Make sure that each letter is tailored to the program you are applying for and highlight the skills, experiences and qualities that make you a good fit for that program.

  • Make sure that you provide your LoR authors with ample time to complete their letters as each letter should be written with care and attention to detail.

  • Ask your LoR authors to submit their letters at least four weeks before the program’s deadline.

  • Make sure that your LoRs are written on official letterhead and include the author’s signature.

  • When you receive the LoRs, take a few moments to review them to make sure they reflect positively on you and support your candidacy.

USMLE Transcripts: How to Authorize and Pay for Release

  • Many MD residency programs require the USMLE transcript as part of an application in order for candidates to be considered for their positions.

  • In order to have their USMLE transcript assigned to the programs they’ve chosen, applicants must authorize the release of the transcript.

  • Log in to MyERAS and navigate to the Documents tab.

  • In the USMLE Transcripts section, click on Authorize Release.

  • Review the information and click on Accept Terms & Conditions.

  • Select the programs to which you wish to release your transcript and click on Submit.

  • Pay the one-time fee of $80 for transmitting USMLE transcripts to the designated programs.

  • View the USMLE Requests Status Report to track the status of your USMLE requests by program.

COMLEX-USA Transcripts: How to Authorize and Pay for Release

  • Many AOA-accredited and ACGME-accredited residency programs require a COMLEX-USA transcript as part of a D.O. applicant’s application to be considered for their positions.

  • Log into your MyERAS account.

  • Select ‘Authorize the Release for COMLEX-USA Transcript’ in the Documents section.

  • Choose the programs to receive the COMLEX-USA transcript.

  • Pay the one-time fee of $80 to NBOME or ECFMG (for IMG Residency).

  • Monitor the COMLEX-USA Requests Status Report in MyERAS for updates on the status of your request.

MSPE: Who is Responsible for Uploading?

The Medical School Performance Evaluation (MSPE or “Dean’s Letter”) is a document that must be uploaded into the ERAS system for residency applicants. An applicant's Designated Dean's Office is responsible for uploading the MSPE into the ERAS system. 

For IMG residency applicants, the applicant must indicate in MyERAS if they themselves or their medical school will provide a MSPE to the ERAS Documents office at the ECFMG. Instructions for submission can be found on the ECFMG website.

Medical School Transcripts: Who is Responsible for Uploading?

An applicant's Designated Dean's Office is responsible for uploading the Medical School Transcript into the ERAS system for residency applicants. 

IMG residency applicants must indicate in MyERAS if they themselves or their medical school will provide a Medical School Transcript to the ERAS Documents office at ECFMG. Instructions for submission can be found on the ECFMG website.

ECFMG Status Report for IMGs: How to Obtain and Upload

International Medical Graduates (IMGs) must obtain an ECFMG Status Report in order to apply for residency positions. The ECFMG is responsible for uploading this report into the ERAS system. 

Applicants must create an account with the ECFMG and request the report which verifies their certification status. Once the report has been obtained, applicants can then log in to their MyERAS account and upload the document. 

The entire process should not take more than a few minutes and can be done quickly and easily.
